I’m excited to report that fellow Maryland kidlit creator Olga Herrera is about to release her author/illustrator picture book debut, THE UNWELCOME SURPRISE (Feiwel and Friends, April 18, 2023)! Jonathan: Congratulations on your awesome picture book debut! How did you get into creating children’s books?
Olga: Looking back, I realize I should’ve always leaned into creating children’s books, but it was later in life (past the age of 40) that I figured that out. I was first an illustrator, and the love of writing came later. Both are forms of storytelling and now I am lucky enough to use both.
Jonathan: THE UNWELCOME SURPRISE is certain to resonate with any kids about to experience that big change. What inspired you to write this touching story?

El arte me ha acompañado desde pequeña, pero no encontré mi lugar en este oficio hasta la cuarentena, cuando decidí dejar de soñar y empezar a trabajar.
Nací en Estados Unidos pero me crié en el Ecuador. Mi mamá es cubana y mi papá es ecuatoriano. Cuando regresé a los Estados Unidos, descubrí el arte de  Walt Disney  y me aficioné a dibujar  para niños. Me gradué en Ilustración en el  Ringling  College of Art and  Design a los treinta años y me hice socia de SCBWI.  En la asociación gané el concurso del logo  para los congresos locales dos años consecutivos (2019 y 2020). En el año 2020 firmé con mi agente y vendimos mi primer libro escrito e ilustrado: The  New  Favorite Thing,  publicado por  Feiwel  and  Friends. El año que viene tendré el honor de ser uno de los mentores en SCBWI (MD/DW/WV).

1. Tus inicios. ¿Cuál es tu formación académica? ¿Cuándo te interesaste por la ilustración y en especial, por el álbum ilustrado?
El arte siempre fue parte de mí. Estudié ilustración en el Rigling College of Art and Design y me gradué con una licenciatura en Bellas Artes con especialización en ilustración. El estilo de arte que aprendí era el más adecuado para la ilustración editorial, no la narrativa para cuentos infantiles, y no sabía mucho sobre el mundo de la literatura infantil ni la publicación en ese entonces. Dejé pasar mucho tiempo pensando que era un sueño inalcanzable. ¡Hasta que un día me dije que no esperaría! y en 2018 fui a un taller de SCBWI y pedí una crítica profesional de portafolio con un director de arte.
